There was a Henry Challener listed in the 1851 British census as a gun finisher, born in Liverpool, aged 20 and living in Weaman St Birmingham, only a few minutes walk from W.Tranter in St Marys Row. Challener was the son of Henry Challener, a gunmaker of Birmingham England and was born circa 1829. He migrated to Sydney from England in 1853, married Catherine Mary Flannigan in 1857 with one child, retired in 1875 and died at Ormand Lodge Sarah St Paddington on January 17th 1877. His private residence was named "Gunnery Villa". Challener advertised as being an agent of Tranter. Prior to his death the business was taken over by F Hermelin.
