Charles Cowles was born on March 8th 1837 in Topcroft Norfolk England, in 1864 he married Cecilia Dunn at Walworth Surrey. Migrated in 1864 with his employer William Green (of Prince and Green 138 Bond St London), to Queensland and then to Sydney where Green set up as a gunsmith in Market St. Green fell ill and returned to England and Cowles took over the business. In 1885 he went into partnership with his brother in law Arthur Dunn trading as Cowles, Dunn and Co.About 1892 the name was changed to Cowles and Dunn. Cowles was a member of the first Mosman Council, being the Mayor 1894-5. Charles Cowles  passed away at Mosman on December 24th 1923.
